Our Alaskan ferry from Haines to Skagway is actually so stupidly inefficient it's hilarious

First off, we were told to show up 2h early for a 1h long ferry ride.

Then you have to walk inside and speak to a clerk to check in and get boarding passes.

When its time to board, a ticketer walks down the aisles of cars asking for tickets, but theres no announcement telling people to return to their vehicles. So, the poor ticketer is running around trying to find people and which vehicle is theirs.

Driving onto the ramp was a total free for all, literally 4 lanes went forward at once.

Then they took a full hour to load ~50 vehicles.

Also the foot passengers had to load through the same ramp as the vehicles slowing everything down a little more.

We've been borded for 40 mins and I've had the time to type all this up and we still haven't even left.

I'm not even mad, it's just making me laugh.

Oh, but that wasn't all. When we were heading out the RV next to us was parked so absurdly close we couldn't even open our doors.

And finally, the ramp we were getting out was so steep the same RV that was parked next to us bottomed out on the ramp and it screwed up the bottom real bad.

Safe to say under any circumstances avoid travelling with alaska ferries...

This is a less expensive alternative to the cruise ship and travels to more places and people from the area and around the world all year round. The larger boats have berths for extended tours. Whales are spotted regularly. The state administration is trying eliminate winter service which the southeast communities depend on for family travel from many otherwise isolated communities.

Enjoyed the ferry. The people loading it are good at tetris and checking drivers driving skills. It was the smaller boat on a Sunday evening. Fresh hot food when the galley opened. Beautiful scenery as well.

I had no reservation (Haines to Skagway), but they offered me a standby ticket, 5 others in front of me. Everybody was very friendly and helpful. Told me, it could be worth waiting without any guaratee. So I did. I had to wait until nearly everbody in line was in the ferry. A few minutes before departure they told me there is space for my rv. All of the staff were very friendly! Thanks a lot to everybody on that boat! Would like to come back!

I used the Alaska Marine Highway for a one way from Skagway to Haines on foot (no car).

Unfortunately, I would NOT recommend using this service to pedestrians from Skagway to Haines. The Haines ferry terminal is 4 miles from town and there are competitors (fjordlines, the fast ferry) that have equivalent prices but that dock right in town.

Unfortunately the Alaska Marine Highway ship was fairly dirty as well - lots of garbage strewn about in the upper deck seating area. I would not use this service unless you needed to take a vehicle across.

It is a small terminal. Smaller than Juneau. A check in/out area with a few attendants. Show your ferry pass and ID to board. There is a medium parking lot area with a place to walk along the road or to a small shelly beach area.
Friendly but business Like attendants. There is a lighted dome clear walkway from the larger boats/cruise ships. I believe Juneau has a medium size welcome building in parking lot, not Haines. Not 100%. Check.

We arrived with our 28 foot airstream and found the staff nothing but professional, knowledgeable and very courteous. We were impressed with their skills helping me back down the ramp. Thank you
