An absolutely beautiful place to enjoy your love for horses! The staff and management are professional and friendly. The facilities are clean and safety is a priority for horses and humans.

If you are searching for top of the line boarding and peace of mind, Barberry is the answer.

I believe that Barberry is a small piece of heaven on earth; with the horses as the angels keeping vigil on the land.

As a preface I would like to say that I had no previous connection or knowledge to this farm nor the people affiliated until my experience. This review is based on my objective experience during a period of hands-on training at the farm.

As a professional in the equine community, I have visited many barns and have vast experience with what is needed for them to succeed. The number one requirement is good management, and that is one thing that Barberry Farm is sorely missing. Already at my very first visit, Kirsten was badmouthing not only her own employees, but also her boarders with no concern for confidentiality. This trend of gossiping about the boarders continued every time I met Kirsten after that. I personally would not want to board at a place where management is badmouthing me to employees or other boarders. During my time there, both current and past employees reached out to me with warnings about Kirsten, but I was determined to form my own opinion.

It is a concern that Kirsten does not take the time to train employees sufficiently. In fact, she never gave me any guidance herself and did not overlook my training at all. Employees would make many errors that could turn into safety concerns. Some examples were incorrectly or unsafely attaching straps on the horses sheets, incorrectly putting on horse’s boots at turnout or omitting them completely, putting horses in the incorrect stalls or pastures, and rough and unsafe handling of the horses while leading. When I brought these things to Kirsten’s attention, she stated that the employees in question weren’t actual employees so sufficient training was not needed. If these people are not actual employees, they should not be directly handling horses and have responsibilities regarding the horses safety, including administration of medications and turnout.

The practices for employee and boarder protection are very unethical. Kirsten gives promises of high pay and future possibilities for growth and benefits to potential employees, but once they are on board she pays a lower rate than promised and threatens with lawyers if they question it. She also pays cash under the table which is not only illegal, but also dangerous. If one of the under-trained “not employees” get hurt by a horse, there is no insurance protecting the boarders from potential legal fees because these workers are not on payroll. She refuses to provide pay stubs or any written confirmation of employment or payment for tax purposes.

Obviously I have text messages and emails confirming and proving all of this. Kirsten encouraged me to give notice at my current job to assume more hours at the farm; thankfully I did not.

Never consider boarding a horse at this facility. When paying $1100-1400 a month for board, the least one expects is the safety of one’s horse. That is not something that is guaranteed at this facility.o
