This is really one of my favorite native plant nurseries in Los Angeles. It’s a little out of the way, but their selection is enormous and their prices are below average for the types of plants. The owner/operator is a super knowledgeable person and he has just the right amount of attention to the clientele to know when they have questions or when they just want to look around. My only complaint is I wish they were closer to where I am.

If you want native California plants go see Bob!

I've been using Matilija nursery for over 10 years, in a professional capacity on habitat restorations sites throughout southern California, and finally in my home yard after I killed and removed my lawn. Over the years I've used Bob to contract grow specific species for specific habitat restoration projects and dropped by to snag 20 or 30 plants to supplement other restorations sites. Just this past year I was able to source, with Bobs help, over 200 individual plants comprised of 35 different species of plants to create my own personal habitat restoration site at my home in Camarillo. Bob is very knowledgeable and always eager to have a chat about plants, nature, or really anything. I always refer people to Matilija, and will keep doing so for as long as Bob is doing his thing.

Update: March 19, 2024, see the progress about 9 months on. I'll say it again, go to Bob if you want CA native plants!

A really unique nursery specializing in California natives, well worth the trip! The selection and quality is really impressive, and the prices are super reasonable. Highly recommend. A couple things to note for anyone going for the first time - the entrance is marked with a small sign on the side of the road, and you enter through what appears to be a residential driveway, but keep going 'til you see the shade structures. The plants aren't labeled, so if you can't identify what you're looking for yourself, the owner will walk you through and tell you what's what. He is a veritable encyclopedia of native plant knowledge, and a pleasure to talk to.

Matilija is the best native plant nursery in Southern California! Wonderful owner and staff, beautiful nursery in Moorpark off Balcom Canyon. I've been going here for several years and I have been 100% successful with their plants. The selection is incredible and they are lovingly cared for. It is hard to find native Milkweed for Monarchs, but they have lots of narrow-leaf milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis) and showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa) for your baby butterflies.

This unassuming place, out of the way between Somis and Moorpark, has the most amazing selection of California Native / drought-tolerant plants. We have obtained 50%+ of our landscape plants from Bob at Matilija Nursery, and have enjoyed every moment of our conversations with him (the other 49% came from the Theodore Payne Foundation in Sun Valley).
We live on a rocky hillside on the northwest flank of the Santa Monica Mountains, and Bob was very knowledgeable and helpful in steering us towards beautiful, functional plants that have thrived in our setting.

Matilija Nursery in Moorpark is a great resource for anyone who is interested in California native plants and Irises. To get to is a fun adventure in itself. Bob recently added a sign. Google maps will successfully lead you to the driveway (just don't expect to see from road). Simply drive in (the house in front is not part of nursery). The selection is huge the help? Great! Moreover, I have found Bob's prices about 20% more affordable than other native plant nurseries.

I was looking for California native plants and found this place via the internet. We drove from Santa Clarita to pick up twelve plants about two months ago. Fun spot. Bob is very knowledgable and was patient with all my questions. I can't wait to see our plants grow and to return for more!
