Freight Farms: A Revolution in Urban Agriculture

Freight Farms is a unique company dedicated to bringing sustainable, localized food production to urban environments. They specialize in providing hydroponic growing systems – essentially, self-contained, insulated shipping containers transformed into fully functional indoor farms – to businesses and individuals. Their mission is to “chain the food system”, fostering resilience and reducing reliance on traditional, often long-distance, food supply chains. Located at 20 Old Colony Ave, Boston, MA 02118, Freight Farms offers a compelling solution for communities seeking to increase access to fresh, healthy produce, while simultaneously addressing environmental concerns and promoting local economic development. Individuals and organizations can easily cultivate a wide variety of crops, from leafy greens and herbs to tomatoes and even strawberries, regardless of their prior agricultural experience.

The Freight Farms System: A Detailed Overview

At the heart of Freight Farms’ offering is the Freight Farm itself. These systems come in various sizes, catering to diverse needs and spaces. The flagship model, the Xtreme, is a robust container designed for larger-scale operations, while the Leafy Green Machine is a more compact option suitable for smaller spaces like restaurants, offices, or even individual homes. Both systems are equipped with a recirculating hydroponic system, LED grow lights, and a climate control unit that maintains optimal growing conditions year-round.

  • Hydroponic Technology: Freight Farms utilize a soilless growing method, delivering nutrients directly to the plant roots. This drastically reduces water consumption and eliminates the need for pesticides and herbicides.
  • Climate Control: The insulated containers maintain a consistent temperature and humidity level, crucial for successful crop growth, regardless of external weather conditions.
  • Smart Controls: The systems are equipped with sensors and a user-friendly interface that monitors and adjusts environmental parameters automatically, simplifying the growing process.
  • Modular Design: Freight Farms are designed to be easily customizable and expandable, allowing users to add additional growing beds or features as their needs evolve.

Business to Business Service & Community Impact

Freight Farms operates primarily as a Business to Business (B2B) service, partnering with organizations across various sectors. Restaurants utilize Freight Farms to grow fresh ingredients for their menus, reducing food costs and enhancing the quality of their offerings. Offices incorporate them as employee wellness initiatives, promoting healthy eating habits and fostering a connection to their food source. Schools and community organizations leverage Freight Farms to educate students and residents about sustainable agriculture and nutrition. The company's success is evident in the numerous testimonials highlighting its positive impact, as exemplified by a visitor from Hawaii who noted the “Amazing Urban Farming project” and the ‘super helpful staff’.

I worked with their systems and a lot of what they sell does not correspond to what you get in the reality. Lettuce heads are way smaller, their RoI calculations are not as expected. There’s a whole community facing these same problems. Would not recommend
